A huge floral carpet is laid out on the Grand Place in Brussels
A huge floral carpet, made of up to a million flowers, is laid on the Grand Place in Brussels, Belgium. A carpet of flowers is laid on the square every two years. The display measures 24 by 77 metres (79 by 253 ft), giving an area of 1,800 square metres (19,000 sq ft).
The flowers – mostly begonias with dahlias – are packed together one by one, by hand, 300 to every square metre.
The giant floral jigsaw is put together in under four hours.
This year’s design is based on the patterns of brightly-coloured African textiles.
